Refugee Travel Document

A Refugee Travel Document (RTD) is a travel document issued by the U.S. Department of State to refugees who are lawful permanent residents of the United States. It allows refugees to travel outside the United States and return to the United States.

To be eligible for an RTD, you must:

  • Be a refugee who is a lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • Be outside of the United States
  • Need to travel outside of the United States
  • Be admissible to the United States

You can apply for an RTD at a U.S. embassy or consulate outside of the United States. You will need to provide your passport, birth certificate, and proof of refugee status. You will also need to pay the application fee.

The processing time for an RTD can vary, but it typically takes several weeks. Once your application is processed, you will receive an RTD in the mail.

The RTD is valid for one year from the date of issuance. If you need to travel outside the United States for more than one year, you will need to apply for a new RTD.

The RTD is an important document for refugees who need to travel outside the United States for extended periods of time. It allows them to maintain their lawful permanent resident status while they are outside the United States. If you are a refugee who needs to travel outside the United States, you should consider applying for an RTD.
