Re-entry Permit

Re-entry Permit

A United States Reentry Permit is a document issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to certain lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who wish to travel outside the United States for more than one year but less than two years.

LPRs who are eligible for a Reentry Permit include:

  • LPRs who are traveling outside the United States for medical treatment
  • LPRs who are traveling outside the United States to visit family or friends
  • LPRs who are traveling outside the United States for business
  • LPRs who are traveling outside the United States to attend school

To apply for a Reentry Permit, you must:

  • Be a lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be physically present in the United States when you apply
  • Be admissible to the United States
  • Pay the application fee

You can apply for a Reentry Permit online or by mail. If you apply online, you will need to create a USCIS account and pay the application fee with a credit or debit card. If you apply by mail, you will need to print the application form, complete it by hand, and mail it to the USCIS address listed on the form. You will also need to include your passport photo and supporting documents with your application.

The processing time for a Reentry Permit can vary, but it typically takes several months. Once your application is processed, you will receive a Reentry Permit in the mail.

The Reentry Permit is valid for two years from the date of issuance. If you need to travel outside the United States for more than two years, you will need to apply for a new Reentry Permit.

The Reentry Permit is an important document for LPRs who need to travel outside the United States for extended periods of time. It allows you to maintain your lawful permanent resident status while you are outside the United States. If you are an LPR who needs to travel outside the United States for more than one year, you should consider applying for a Reentry Permit.
